Episode 212: 30 Minutes With The Poor Man Prepper(10/17/2012)…
Show Summary:
After a taking a couple of days off the Poor Man Prepper is back(that would be me by the way). Yours truly, Lat Cozad. And really, over the last couple of weeks the show has been on part-time status, as I have been working two jobs.
However, after putting up an Herculean effort over the last two weeks, I decided that I could not work two jobs and deliver quality daily content. So, one of the two jobs had to go bye, bye. That would be the part-time job that I was working at the restaurant. I departed on great terms with the management, gave my notice, and worked the notice out. No real loss, as I was not making any money from grueling, back breaking work busing a ton of tables.
That brings us back to the podcast. During all of the hours of arduous work, I came to a conclusion. The show needed a change. A regular format, but different in comparison to the days when the Poor Man Prepper podcast was coming out of Gastonia, NC.
From now on, the show will run 12 podcasts a week, rain or shine(with the exception of holidays and vacations on my part). Tuesday and Thursday shows will return to 15 – 20 minute length segments and the rest of the episode/segments will run 25-35 minutes in length. The 15-20 minute shows are subject to change in the future, but not anytime soon. Finally, The Week In Review From A Libertarian’s Perspective will run from 35-45 minutes in length.
The new show format will officially begin next week. I am ready to re-energize this podcast and I hope you are as well. Lets do this!

Curtsey of BBC News, Japan exports fall on weak demand in China and Europe, by Staff
Exports fell 8.1% from the previous year, much more than the 2.9% drop economist were predicting.
High oil prices have also increased the cost of energy imports, which Japan relies on for power generation.
Many Asian export economies have reported weak trade figures in recent months.
Japan saw a 25.1% plunge in overseas shipments to the European Union as the sovereign debt crisis continues to hurt demand. It was the biggest drop since October 2009.

Episode 169: Sci-Fi Saturday – Gattaca…
Show Summary:
Imagine a world where everyone is engineered before birth. Before actually conception, in a tube, at some bioengineering lab. People are bread to be the absolute best person that their parents DNA can create. A world of people designed, to be the absolute best that humanity has to offer.
No more diseases passed on by genetics. No more suffering from common day problems with vision, cardiovascular deficiencies, or other aliments that we are born with. These diseases are almost wiped out of human existence, a plague to never return.
Except for the humans who never received the DNA improvements. Naturally born humans, with same the problems that we suffer from today. And as a consequence, these naturally born humans are pushed into a corner of society were they are discriminated against because of their inability to compete with superior DNA enhanced humans.
Forced to work menial jobs, these humans are faced with a lifetime of mediocrity. A few however, decide to take their fates into their own hands and pose as the elite through deception. These humans are known as “borrowed ladders,” using DNA from a minority of the fallen elite to create new lives for themselves.
Show Notes/Topics And Links:
-
Gattaca(1997)
-
Fantastic movie
-
Imagine a future where your life is already planned out for you
-
No choice before birth
-
Born into bondage, but not with shackles or chains – but with the burden of perfection on your shoulders
-
If you are not engineered before birth – you face a life of mediocrity
-
Forced to work menial jobs – unable to find productive work as you not chosen
-
DNA coding is used against the population – if you do not have the correct DNA – you are prohibited from joining or taking part – a new way of discriminating against and segregating society – you are easily tracked because you are boxed in
-
A few choose to break the system – borrow DNA from the fallen elite(hair, skin, blood, and urine)
-
These few feel that they are no different in comparison to their superior counterparts – at least not in terms of intellect and drive/ambition – they chose not accept a path that was predestined for them – they fight in their own way by not complying
-
Imagine a society were the Nazi’s created their master race – not by force of arms, but technological innovation, slowly implementing a design over a matter of years/decades and society accepts these changes because the changes come in gradual increments, slowly but surely replacing normal humans
-
This movie is important to me because showed me as young adult, that I did not have accept the normality of society – that deviance was okay

Episode 128: Sci-Fi Saturday – L. Neil Smith’s, The Probability Broach…
Show Summary:
Today we are going take a look at the first work of one the most prolific libertarian science fiction writers of the last 30 years, L. Neil Smith. In The Probability Broach, Lt. Edward William “Win” Bear is launched into another realm of existence and encounters an entirely new world. A world where government is declining and the individual is succeeding.
The world that Lt. Bears is removed from, is a dystopian reality, set in the late 1980s(this novel was published in 1980). It’s amazing how prophetic Simth’s vision of the future was. A world where the government in the United States is virtually in control of most decisions and regulations galore. The Probability Broach shows that an alternate existence is possible, we just need to make an effort to at least consider another reality.
I highly suggest picking up this novel for an introduction into Smith’s science fiction writings. The Probability Broach is also the first novel in the Confederacy series, an expansion into the alternate libertarian universe. Currently, I am reading Lever Action: Essays On Liberty, a collection of essays about libertarianism and the I am looking forward to reading more of Mr. Smith’s novels in the future.
Show Notes/Topics:
-
L. Neil Smith’s first novel
-
Main Character – Lt. Edward William “Win” Bear – Denver police officer
-
Alternate reality
-
Miniarchists and Anarchocapaitalists
-
The idea – show a world where the government is basically non-essential and more of a formality/nuisance and how that world is so much better off compared to Win’s reality
-
Oh yeah, everybody is armed and no police exist
-
Unfortunately our world looks more like the reality that Ed leaves/escapes from
-
Think about the stupidity of the laws and regulations that we have put in place and the elected leaders
-
Imagine a world where innovation and creativity are the cornerstones of the society and not rules that are supposedly in a place to protect ourselves from the reality of existence
-
The ingenuity of the human mind will protect us – not ink on a 2000 page document
-
And think how much better it would be if we just let go – trust ourselves to make the right and wrong decisions – but not sacrificing individualism for the supposed insurance of safety
-
Humanity creates the systems of control like governments, marxism, democracy, republicanism
-
Great work – buy a copy today

Episode 116: Sci-Fi Saturday – Logan’s Run…
Show Summary:
Today I am going to talk about a movie that I saw way too many times growing up on TBS. Logan’s Run was released in 1976(two years before I was born). So, as you can imagine, the special effects were not all that great. But glitter and glam sometimes does not make the movie.
Actually, it’s usually a distraction that covers up just a badly written, badly acted movie. The acting and script for this film, in my humble opinion, is decent enough. Overall I thought the film was quite enjoyable as I can still watch it today and be entertained.
Logan’s Run is based from a book written by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, aptly named, Logan’s Run. There is actually a series of books that branched off from the original, including a graphic novel. Unfortunately, I have not read any of these books as of yet, but they are on the reading list(well, at the least the first book).
Show Notes/Topics And Links:
-
The movie(1976)
-
Humanity has been encased inside of a domed city
-
Sandman
-
Runners, Carrousel, Renewal, and Sanctuary
-
Logan bounces – the tables are turned on Logan, as his time is up prematurely – does not want to carrousel
-
What I think this movie teaches – A society/culture that becomes so blinded by their beliefs that they are unwilling to accept any new ideas. A quantum shift moment is needed for that change to take place. That is why change is so difficult in human society.
-
Belief systems – keeping an open mind – political and religious beliefs do not have to be set in stone

Episode 104: Sci-Fi Saturday – Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers…
Show Summary:
On Today’s show I will discuss Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers. Probably one of the greatest science fiction novels ever written(especially for us libertarians out there). Definitely a most read!
Now to before we start, the listener must decouple their idea of the movie from the book. Yes, I actually enjoyed the movie. And in the fact, saw the movie long before I read the book.
However, like most movies adopted from books, there are some significant differences. For one, Denise Richards and Dina Meyer are not in the book. Bummer. And no nude scenes with Dina Meyer; even a bigger bummer. Remember, movie vs. book.
The MI(Mobile Infantry) are also encased in a form of battle armor. This battle armor allows the troopers to drop from orbit in capsules and stay in the fight longer than the infantry that we saw in the movie. And the armor also allows the MI to cover far more ground(the armor cannot fly, but a trained trooper can bound/jump over great distances while using the armor).
Now that we covered that, let’s talk about the book. There is a war with the bugs, but in a way the war almost takes a back seat in the overall story. The story is mainly based on Johnnie Rico and his journey through adolescences, joining the MI, boot camp, duty with the Roughnecks, and officer training. Through this journey, Johnnie discovers a great bit about himself and the society that he lives in and serves.
Show Notes/Topics:
-
One of Heinlein’s best novels, but a little slow some times
-
The franchise can only be given to a citizen who has served in the military – all others in the Terran Federation are civilians, unable to vote or hold public office
-
This weeds out the people who would not take the responsibility to protect the Federation, from making decisions that could destroy the Federation, once again they have not shown the responsibility for that kind of authority
-
History and Moral Philosophy
-
Everybody works, everybody fights
-
The war with the Arachnids – “The Bugs”
-
Individualism vs Communism

Episode 95: Sci-Fi Saturday – The Matrix…
Show Summary:
Today I am going to talk about one of my favorite movies of all time, The Matrix, and why I think this movie is a theatrical masterpiece. There is so much more to this movie than martial arts or special effects. This movie is all about the individual choosing to make a change in their lives. The whole concept is very simple, but the way that the Wachowski brothers decided to present this concept was awe inspiring. So buckle up, strap in, and get ready. The show is about to begin.
Show Notes And Links:
-
Neo’s(Keanu Reeves) journey from the normality of Mr. Anderson’s existence to becoming The One.
-
The mechanisms of our current society is the restriction that humanity faces daily-the normality of our existence
-
The symbolism of the Red Pill-How we choose to take the Red Pill or Blue Pill everyday

-
The Agent-Mr. Smith(Hugo Weaving) is the computer program inside of the Matrix, but is also symbolic of the malice in all of our hearts. The agents represent the perceived impossibilities that our minds portrays to us if the task seems to incredible
