Episode 347:  The Monthly Crime Report(4-14-2013)…

Show Summary:

Today I will discuss the continued decline of structure and stability in the cities of Detroit, MI, Chicago, IL and Oakland, CA(Kalifornia).  These cities represent the bloated bureaucracies of old and how these mega municipalities are currently incapable of dealing with the crime within these cities.  Unfortunately, the combination of ineptitude within the government’s of these cities, combined with the inability of the citizens to form an effective voice that could form grass-roots community based movements to deal with this devolution is why these cities are places to be avoided.  Or if on vacation/business, be very careful and only stay in well maintained areas(sometimes this is not even enough as we will discuss today).

Problems With These Cities – Minute 3:45

  • Police forces have been reduced due to budget cuts, the district attorney offices are a joke, the bureaucrats/politicians are an even bigger joke and no cohesive grass-roots movement by the citizens to do something constructive to stop the crime

Oakland, CA(Kalifornia) – Minute 8:16

Detroit, MI – Minute 14:01

Episode 163:  US Politics and Geo-Political Updates In The World(8/15/2012)…

Show Summary:

This is kind of a new show segment for the Poor Man Prepper podcast.  I do not know if this will become a permanent fixture in the show line up, or not.  I figure that I will put some training wheels on and see how far I can take this segment.  So, without further ado, time to get the show started.

Show Notes/Topics And Links:

  • I had a long day today – that is why I am so late with getting the podcasts out – drove about 9 1/2 hours in a 24 hour day – it felt like fall in Salem, VA today – well a North Carolina fall anyway – the weather was awesome!

US Politics:

  • The muzzle is off of Biden, as he lets loose with all kinds of silly comments this week
  • Biden is only able to draw about 600 people for an event
  • The Mittens/Ryan team have apparently energized the Republican base
  • The R’s are attacking the D’s on Obamacare, the part where 800 billion was chopped out of Medicare to fund Obamacare – kind of an attempt to turn the tables on the D’s with their attacks on Ryan for wanting to take Medicare away from a little old ladies in wheel chairs
  • The D’s are still predictably attacking Ryan about his budget plans – the race is starting to turn vicious in Mid – August

Geo-Political Updates:

  • Syria is looking more and more like Vietnam in 1975 – everybody is pulling out – but other countries bordering Syria, like Lebanon are being affected as well – very similar to Cambodia and Laos – there could be tremendous instability in that area when the rebels take control
  • I wonder if the Russians will fight to control their Naval base
  • More posturing against Israel from Iran – Israel is doing the same to Iran – Brent and WTI are going up as a result as sanctions against Iran are on
  • With all eyes on the Middle East – our attention is diverted away from other places in the world – a Black Swan event could come out of left field while we are focused elsewhere
  • For instance – there is a lot of bickering over disputed oil sights in the South China Sea between the players in that area – China, Vietnam, Taiwan, and the Philippians
  • A fight over dwindling resources by sovereign countries could result in the next BIG war – remember we only have so much for a lot of people in this world

Episode 117:   The Week In Review From A Libertarian’s Perspective(7-22-2012)…

Show Summary:

The early Friday morning shooting at the movie theater in Aurora, CO for the new Batman movie was a tragic event.  My condolences go out to all the people who lost loved ones at that event and to anyone else who was affected by this tragedy.  This is surely a sad time in America.

As a libertarian, my perspective towards firearm ownership has not changed.  I still support the individual’s right to carry a firearm.  However, incidents like the Colorado attack, gives me pause.

When incidents like this happen, I mentally play a game of devil’s advocate in my mind.  This is in an effort to look at and consider opposing views to my own.  To blindly not consider another view shields myself from new insights that could make my life better.  And unfortunately could leave me astray, down the path towards fanaticism.

I do not consider this a knee jerk reaction, simply a thought experiment.  And I have wondered over the last couple of days if our society would be safer if firearms were banned from society. I had the same thoughts after the Virginia Tech shooting.

However, as a student of history, I know that a disarmed society is ripe for the taking.  Either by criminals, governments, kingdoms, or tyrannies.  The rule of authority comes by the mantle of steel and power.

Fear is the mind killer that allows people to succumb to this authoritarian rule.  A fear driven by the hopes that the weak shall be protected by the strong.  But these hopes are almost always betrayed by the strong, who understand that the weak, after forfeiting any chance to protect themselves, can be easily subjected to the rule of a few.

Also, on today’s list of topics for review, Spain falling into economic dismay, US heading into recession, and why are oil futures spiking now?  So buckle up, strap in, and get ready.  The show is about to begin.

Show Notes/Topics:

  • The terrible Colorado theater shooting
  • I still and will always support firearms ownership – despite sometimes having my own personal misgivings
  • Spain is in pain
  • US is heading for recession
  • Is the oil spike from congressional insiders bidding up the price on the futures market?  Congressional insiders who might have some kind intel for a possible large-scale shooting war in Middle-East.

Episode 101:  Is The Looming Municipal Bankruptcy Crisis Now Upon Us?…

Show Summary:

Today we are heading back into the communities across the US to take a look at the possibility of a municipality bankruptcy crisis that could destroy any hopes of economic recovery.  We are going to look at a few of the indebted cities in Kalifornia that have recently filed for bankruptcy and I am going to go back and revisit a city that is also going through their own financial problems that I covered earlier this year.  And finally I am going to discuss a local community that is spending money like crazy on a project that will make one roll their eyes on the silliness of the idea.

It has been well over a year since Meredith Whitney sounded the alarm about the possibility of municipalities succumbing to unsustainable debt levels.  Now it seems that her dire predictions are ever so slowly coming true.  Like Europe, the US is indebted up to its eyeballs and will only be able to pay back a portion of this borrowed money.  So buckle up, strap in, and get ready.  The show is about to begin.

P.S. I found out what is making the popping noise on the podcast-I am working on a solution now!

Hey Folks,

I hope everyone is doing great today.  Today we are going to take a look at small towns across the country and see how the are dealing with the present day life in America.  All of the stories that found today were located in the Midwest or the Northeast.

 Today’s Show Notes:

  • Local hardware making a comeback?
  • Ouch; lots of debt for a town of only two hundred seventy-seven to pay for it.
  • Fracking ban upheld by a local judge.
    • Is fracking causing earthquakes?
    • Did the Obama administration kill the Keystone Pipeline Project because of a possible earthquake caused by fracking.
  • Wired news in your home town.

And problems in my home town with new conference center that was just opened.  Well it is now closed until further notice due to conflicting engendering reports.  Conference center cost 10 million dollars.

Update:  unfortunately, I have still not attended a local town or county commissioners meeting.  However, this weekend I intend to go through the recent meetings notes and see if I can find out anymore information about the closing the conference centers closing.  This new center was supposed to be a huge economic plus for the town.  I hope we do not end up like our fellow citizens in Schneider.  Broke and on the hood for a lot of cash.

My trip to a local bookstore and my impressions.

  • Will the small book store survive while the big box stores close their chains?  Probably, at least for a while longer as they serve a specific niche books and convenience.

Hi Folks,

This past weekend I decided to take my first steps towards getting closer to my local community.  Yep, I went to my local hardware store.  The one located within five minutes walking distance from my home.  The name of this establishment is East Gaston Hardware located in Gastonia.

Now to be honest, this is a sad admission on my part.  I have lived at my current address for over four years now.  And not once have I visited this hardware store.  Instead, I always go to the big box stores to satisfy my shopping needs.  By doing so I have missed an opportunity to help a local business.  A local business that has the potential to bring value to my life.

Case in point; over the last two weeks I have been trying to find a particular product in the camping sections of two different Wal-Marts.  The product that I was looking for was emergency firewood tender.  This little search was for not, as I could not find the product that I was looking for.  At that point I had given up any hope of finding this product and I was thinking about placing the idea on the back burner.  Pun intended.

This brings us back full circle to our little hardware store.  As I was browsing through the different wares at East Gaston Hardware I stumbled upon the product that I had previously been looking for at Wal-Mart.  The emergency firewood tender and at the price of $3.49.  A great deal in comparison to the prices that I saw on Amazon for similar products.

Firewood Starter

Peak oil is gradually bringing us back to our local communities.  Our worlds are becoming a little smaller every year.  So the next time you drive by a local business, turn around and give that small store a look.  In doing so we can help build relationships with our neighbors.  Bonds that could be important one day.
