Episode 179: Bug Out Bags From Around The World – Weight Concerns And SteriPENs(8/28/2012)…
Show Notes/Topics:
-
I suggest manyitems for your bags/kits on this series, but you should pay attention to weight concerns
-
Every person’s bugout bag/kit will be different because of the place you live and the destination that you plan on heading to
-
But prioritize and do not forget the necessities
-
Focus on ways to continue proper hydration
-
You will perish from lack of potable water far sooner than not having enough food
-
It could take weeks before a person dies from starvation
-
Next – focus on ways to make fire – have several means that can accomplish this inside your kit
-
Exposure will quickly – so focus on means to make shelter and clothes
-
Do not look like some overburden Sherpa when your pack is complete – it does not need to weigh 80 lbs
-
Take some time and go hiking with your pack – figure out what works for you
SteriPEN
-
The SteriPEN is another way to make potable water
-
It uses UV rays to make drinkable water
-
The water needs to be fairly clear or it will not be very effective
-
If you only have access to water that is not clear – you will need to filter the dirt or silt out of the water
-
That can be done with a filter – either with a handkerchief or a coffee filter
-
SteriPEN sales a pre-filter that can be used as well
-
SteriPENs works best with large mouth drinking containers
-
But an adapter can also be purchased so that SteriPENs can be used with narrow mouth bottles
-
The SteriPEN needs batteries – so make sure that you keep extra batteries with you

Episode 178: Fitness Prepping – Several Small Meals vs The Large Meal(8/28/2012)…
Show Notes/Topics:
-
The argument for small meals vs large meals
-
Small Meals
-
There could be an argument that consuming several smaller meals during the day could increase your metabolism
-
But you have to watch your portion intake
-
If you consume six meals during the day and add an extra 100 calories to each meal – well that is another 600 calories added during the day
-
Also, you need to plan your meals in advance – have them prepared – and time budgeted for consumption at the right times during the day
-
Finally – you are teaching yourself to eat – reenforcing that behavior could be a problem if you are consuming too many calories during the day
-
The Large Meal
-
This is easier for maintaining weight
-
How often do you feel hungry during the day?
-
Most Americans eat when they are not hungry – because it has become a habit
-
But even if you are only consuming one or two meals during the day, you still need to watch out and make sure that you are not consuming more calories than you are burning
-
I am currently in the large meal crowd – but I’m geared more to maintaining at the moment
-
Whatever you do – DO NOT GIVE UP!!!

Episode 177: 30 Minutes With The Poor Man Prepper(8/27/2012)…
Show Summary:
Today we are going to focus on moving and mistakes. Lots of mistakes on my part, anyway. And hopefully you guys and gals will be able to learn from my mistakes. So when it becomes time for you to move, you will not have to suffer the way that I did.
Show Notes/Topics:
-
I am taking a break from Sci-Fi Saturday and The Week In Review From A Libertarian’s Perspective for a while – at least until I get back on my feet
-
The forum is now fixed – attachments and avatars can now be loaded
-
Please – plan your moves in advance – at least two weeks out
-
That means writing down what needs to be done in detail – put it on paper and it becomes real instead of just a date in the future
-
Write down all of the addresses that need to be changed – that includes bank accounts, credit cards, pharmacies – all of the important stuff
-
Reserve your moving van in advance – not the day of, because there might not be anything available for that day
-
And make sure that you have enough large boxes to pack away all of the small stuff – this could have saved me several hours of work
-
Sensitive items – family heirlooms, silver, gold – whatever is important to you – keep it close to you while you move, like in your pocket(s)
-
If you take meds = make sure that you have a supply of medication on you just in case you cannot get access to a pharmacy

Curtsey of BBC News, Japan exports fall on weak demand in China and Europe, by Staff
Exports fell 8.1% from the previous year, much more than the 2.9% drop economist were predicting.
High oil prices have also increased the cost of energy imports, which Japan relies on for power generation.
Many Asian export economies have reported weak trade figures in recent months.
Japan saw a 25.1% plunge in overseas shipments to the European Union as the sovereign debt crisis continues to hurt demand. It was the biggest drop since October 2009.

Flash PMI numbers are down for Europe and China
-
America is hanging in there – but with some problems
-
The Good
-
US PMI stays above 50 – expansion

American durable goods – orders are up
-
The Bad
-
American durable good orders are up – but if you take away transportation, and then take away, defense – the we see contraction
New orders for manufactured durable goods in July
increased $9.4 billion or 4.2 percent to $230.7 billion,
the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This increase,
up three consecutive months, followed a 1.6 percent
June increase. Excluding transportation, new orders
decreased 0.4 percent. Excluding defense, new orders
increased 5.7 percent.Transportation equipment, up five of the last six
months, had the largest increase, $9.9 billion or 14.1
percent to $80.4 billion.

Episode 175: Lights Out In India…
Show Summary:
A couple of weeks ago India went through a sever power outage that lasted for two days. Over 600 million people were without power during that time period. That is roughly twice the number of people that is living in America. Without a doubt, if the entire country of America went without power for two days, there would be pure pandemonium.
Today we will take a look at what caused the power outage in India, why there population did not lose their minds, and what we could expect if something similar happened in America. Also we will discuss demographics, resources, and infrastructure. So, set back and get ready. The show is about to begin.

What happened?
-
Curtsey of The Wall Street Journal, India’s Grid Chief Shifts Blame for Blackouts, By SAURABH CHATURVEDI And SANTANU CHOUDHURY
-
That is the big difference between India and the US, their population is use to power outages
-
We Aren’t
-
I expect that if our entire country went without power for several days – there would be chaos by the second day – lots of rioting by the second day in large cities -
-
Especially during the summer – depth of winter could actually be saving a grace because people would stay inside -
-
Many people would die of exposure during those time periods – elderly and the sick – the French power outages back in 03′
-
Let’s compare demographics – India has a population of 1.2 billion people, compared to our 300 million, and the blackout affected a population of 600 million people – twice our number
-
India’s infrastructure is still developing – they have abundant resources for goal mining – but a lot of difficulty accessing those resources because of the size of the nation and the population
-
Curtsey of The Nation, How Did Coal-Rich India End Up With Power Blackouts?, by Daphne Wysham
How did India, a country with plentiful coal reserves and a growing GDP, get into a situation of energy theft and such energy inequality? World Bank policies had a lot to do with it. Coal is India’s biggest and dirtiest source of power, providing over 57 percent of the country’s electricity. Yet, despite its abundance, it is increasingly hard to come by. One reason: unsettled land is in short supply in a country about a third the size of the United States but home to almost four times—or 1.2 billion—people.
-
The population of the world is increasingly at an incredible rate – we need to think about this
-
I fear that we will not be able to keep up with the demand for food and energy
-
And the infrastructure in the US will only get worse due to poor maintenance or no maintenance, because of lack of funding
-
Our spoiled population is generally not prepared for something like this – get ready and prepare for our turn when the lights go out

Episode 173: Bug Out Bags From Around The World – Data On Demand(8/21/2012)…
Show Summary:
Today we will talk about keeping portable data devices with your bug out gear. These days a person could travel different environmental/geographical locations and be faced with new vegetation, animals, and different human societies. Having information with that gives detailed information about changes in your operating environment could be huge. A real game changer and life saver.
Modern technology allows for tons of information to be carried with a bug out bag or survival kit without adding a significant amount of weight. A USB flash drive, smart phone, notepad PCs, and tablet PCs gives users a variety of options to access needed data that could include critical medical information, maps, and other resources. Throw in some way to power your device and you are good to go. These days there are several portable solar charging panels that can be purchased that will keep your alive and well.
And of course a person can go low tech by creating flash cards that give specific information about your bug out location, route to the destination, and your start point. This way you can you save money and not have to worry about carrying the extra gear. But if you decide to go low-tech or high-tech, the need to carry an encyclopedia worth of information these days with you does not mean actually carrying an encyclopedia.
Show Notes/Topics:
-
I was inspired for this podcast because I was stung by a bee in Virginia and that got me thinking what would happen if I encountered a bug or animal in another environment and I did not have information about that critter
-
Data can be carried easily these days
-
Mobile devices can a flash drives can be added to to your bug out kit without the worry of adding a significant amount of weight to your kit
-
Throw in a solar panel to keep your devices charged and you are good to go
-
Do not forget about away to keep your electronics dry and protected against shocks
-
Also consider going low-tech by creating your own flash cards and carrying them in your kits
-
And do not get pissed off and destroy your electronics by doing something stupid

Episode 172: Fitness Prepping – Losing Weight Slowly(8/21/2012)…
Show Summary:
Several years ago I weighed 290 lbs and today I weigh 195 lbs. I lost the weight over time and had several setbacks along the way. The lesson that I want everybody to learn from this podcast is that weight loss takes time to accomplish for long-term success.
Most people actually lose weight when they go on weight loss diets. But seem to hit a wall and put the weight back on. That happens, as it happened to me several times during my weight loss journey. And that is okay, you
Show Notes/Topics:
-
Talking about weight loss today – instead of different ways to work out
-
Most people who try to lose weight are successful during their initial effort and then hit a wall
-
Hitting the wall is normal, but how we respond to that wall is what determines if our weight loss efforts will be successful
-
Most people give up after hitting the wall and never get back on track and head towards their weight loss goals
-
The message that I wanted to pass today is that weight loss takes time
-
Do not expect immediate success and just be patient
-
That is why all of the weight loss quick ads are crap and people spend tons of money on that stuff every year
-
For a huge loss in the wallet and not in the mid-sections
